Judge:
Larry Treadwell
Theme:
Texture

Texture refers to the visual quality of the surface of an object. It’s how a subject’s surface might feel if touched—smooth, rough, soft, or prickly. Texture can be found everywhere, from peeling paint on an abandoned building to the bristly hairs on a bee—even on the seemingly smooth surface of a flower petal. By enhancing and capturing the texture of your subject, you can create more dimension, sense of depth, and “feel.” Lighting from the side of the subject can often reveal texture you never knew was there.

This month we welcome back Larry Treadwell as our judge. Larry has been involved in photography for over 40 years. During this time he has been an Artist in Residence at Great Smoky Mountains National Park and a guest speaker at the U.S. Botanical Garden in Washington D.C., where he spoke on the issues facing the Florida Everglades. Larry is a judge for the Florida Council of Camera Clubs and currently judges numerous international competitions for the Photographic Society of America (PSA), as well as local camera clubs throughout the United States. He also teaches two online courses for PSA: "Image Evaluation" and "Creating Images for Competition."
